The Ryder Family Invites You To Be With Us

as we Showcase Ryder Farm
in Pursuit of the NYS Agricultural Grant
for the Purchase of Development Rights
Of The Family Homestead, 400 Starr Ridge Road, Brewster, NY

The Purchase of Development Rights is a Land Conservation initiative to protect valued open space and farmland,  particularly that which is threatened by development.

In paying the landowner for the value of developing, the land remains undeveloped in perpetuity. The funds received by the landowner are generally invested back into the land to maintain or expand an operation or to sustain the owners as an alternative to selling out.  The NYS Agricultural Grant for PDR, which is being sought by the Ryder Family, would be used as an endowment to sustain this Historic 129-acre property. The funds, which are highly competitive, require a 25% local match. Among supporters such as the Town of Southeast, the Open Space Institute and Putnam County Land Trust, we seek the financial support of Putnam County.

You may be familiar with the Farm already as it has served as a host to the community on many occasions. It was a featured farm on the Farm Tour of the Putnam County Ag Protection Board in 2006, and has frequently served as host to programs of the Southeast Museum and educational programs such as Farm Hands City Hands and NYC Ag, John Bowne High School summer externships. The current farming operations featuring Organically Grown Produce have served local suppliers as well as the Brewster Farmers Market, Community Subscribers to the CSA, and our roadside stand. Local food sourcing is increasingly recognized in these times of food security and fuel economy. Over 50 acres of woodlands are maintained with a Forest Management Plan overseen by the East of Hudson Watershed Agricultural Council. Trails there are nearly contiguous with the Putnam County Land Trust Preserves of Birdwood and Paul Fitchen, enhancing a local green corridor and availability of passive recreation and wildlife diversity. The plight of over development is clear in the community that surrounds Peach Lake. Keeping this parcel open protects local water quality issues. And then there is the history of a family with roots in our community for over 200 years.  PDR provides that the ownership of the property is maintained thus keeping the property on municipal tax rolls and avoiding the burdens of oversight by the municipality.

New York State is standing strong in the support of its Agricultural Heritage in putting forth valuable funds. The time is now for Putnam County and other local supporters to acknowledge this valuable opportunity in preserving the rewards of Local Agriculture and a Working Open Space at a fraction of the input to the total value.

An Outstanding Musical Line Up!

Continuing the legacy of Festival founder and legendary folk singer Pete Seeger, using the "power of song" to promote environmental awareness and action, the Festival offers a blend of Contemporary, Traditional and American Roots music. Some of this year's artists include:

PETE SEEGER, legendary folk singer, activist and founder of

the Clearwater organization.

SKATALITES, a Grammy-nominated ska and reggae band from Jamaica. Originally formed in 1964, the group has charted a number of Top Ten hits in the UK.

FELICE BROTHERS, a new group that is on the fast track to international success. Its gritty Americana sound has been compared to that of a young Bruce Springsteen.

GANDALF MURPHY & THE SLAMBOVIAN CIRCUS OF DREAMS, a quirky quartet hailing from the Hudson Valley. The group has been featured in both the New York Times and the CBS television show, Joan of Arcadia.

R. CARLOS NAKAI, the world's premier performer of the Native American flute. He uses his Navajo-Ute heritage as a source of inspiration and growth.

CHERYL WHEELER, a writer of both emotional and humorous

songs who continues to gain more and more recognition with

each new album.

HAPPY & ARTIE TRAUM, a duo of brothers whose debut album was called "one of the best records in any field of pop music" by the New York Times.

KEVIN SO, a first generation Chinese American whose passion

for singing and playing piano and guitar has won him praise

and helped him to build a substantial fan base from coast-to-coast.

New! CIRCLE OF GOSPEL, a unique performance concept by Pete Seeger, Circle of Gospel reflects Clearwater's ongoing efforts to diversify its musical offerings and encourage audience interaction. Three gospel groups will take center stage simultaneously under a large tent, with three audience groups facing them. Each choir will take turn singing, with the other choirs and audience members responding to their refrains. The singing will "circle" the tent for the entire program. Among the groups performing will be THE SIX OF US, an a cappella group of six women from Poughkeepsie; JUST VOICES, an a cappella group of four men from Wappingers Falls, and THE HIGHER GROUND BAND, a seven-member group from Wappingers Falls that does gospel with a Caribbean flavor.

This year the Festival has significantly stepped up its

efforts to reach its "Zero Waste" goal by arranging to

collect all food waste for composing. Clearwater was the

first major festival to develop the concept more than 42

years ago with the Litter Picking Committee, and today it is

an integral part of our efforts to make our event a model

for all other Festivals to follow.

Clearwater is also using recyclable products and encouraging visitors to bring their own water, minimizing the environmental impact on the site. The five performance stages are all powered with 100% sustainable energy that includes solar and bio-diesel.

The festival will also feature hands-on environmental

education workshops and exhibits, including the GREEN LIVING EXPO, where companies, firms and organizations showcase green products or services, an the ACTIVIST AREA, where visitors can get information on many of the community's important environmental groups.
